I've always thought there was a little bit of magic in capturing personality on camera. Its amazing to watch someone come alive once the lens cap comes off. I think portraits are one of the trickiest but most rewarding shoots. Photographers are image for not only the lighting and background but missing buttons, stray hairs, an untucked pocket or hair tie left on a wrist.... and of course, the expression! Do they look angry when they should look sexy? Are they moving too much? Not enough? Are they bored?
The eyes say everything to me, more then body language, more then the props - it's the eyes. Are you kind? Are you smart? Do I want you? Should I trust you? The best portraits are done by photographers who can figure it all out, set up the shot and snap it at the perfect moment, all while watching out for those untucked pockets and stray hairs.
All of the images above made me feel something, like a little secret was exchanged when I saw each of them. The photographers that shot them did a spectacular job and have inspired me. I think it's time to start shooting more portraits!
